China Merchants Group Industrial Corporation will participate in the construction of deep-water port of Klaipeda

The head of the seaport of Klaipeda Mr. Arvydas Vaitkus announced an agreement with the Chinese company Merchants Group which is associated with the creation of an external port. The negotiation process with the Chinese colleagues are continuing and it has already signed a new memorandum.

So far only considered the prospect of external equipment in Klaipeda port. Today, the official discussed agreement with Merchants Group who voiced their wishes concerning the establishment of a new port is in force. Arvydas Vaitkus said that the events of the coming year will show how the project will be implemented.

According to Director of the General Affairs and Marketing Arturas Drungilas Klaipeda port the construction of the external port will enable larger ships to enter the port which will increase the amount of goods entering Koaypedu. Technical aspects of the organization of the external ports have already been discussed with experts Merchants Group.

During the talks it was discussed the subject of needs to establish a joint group to solve engineering problems and costs for the project. There are two variants for consideration. The first involves the construction by the Chinese side followed by the delivery port to the private rental. Second is when the port being built by Merchants Group and for a while the company carries out activities in its territory and later the company returns the property to Lithuania.

The deepwater port could be built within 6-7 years and become one of the country’s strategic assets.
